But how can I improve my voc
abulary???

Start memorizing the basics, like: colors, animals, objects, pronouns and verbs. Put as a goal memorizing a certain numbers of words per day

You must read articles: you can do this in stages. Read the article, underline the new words and write down a list with them. Try to figure out the meaning of the word by context, and after, go to the dictionary and write de exact meaning of the word in the side. Read and try again. If you want to, you can create phrases with the new words.

Chose a theme to explore your vocabulary. If you like shoes search for words on websites that are about it. Do this with others subjects such as soccer, fashion, make up, cars, tools, etc.
If you enjoy drawing, try to remember the meaning of some words drawing things that make referece tho them. You can also write names of objects in ducked-tape and put on the objects that you have in your house.
Watch films and Tv series in English. Search for international newspaper, books and musics of your preference on-line that are in English.

False Friends

Words that seems to have one meaning but have a different meaning
E.g: My arm/army hurts.
I pretend/intend to enter college.
Push/Pull my finger!

In the Comic Strips:

Costume means the clothes that we wear in parties, not Custom that is a habit, something usual in daily life.

The word Actually in the second comic strip means in fact, trully. Not Actual, that means Atual in portuguese.

Lunch can be a snack or the meal that you have at midday. So we have brakfast in the morning, at the midday we have lunch and at night we have dinner, and between meals we have Snack.

To explore the new words acquired try to:

Check familiarties;

Use words in a sentence;

Explain the meaning;

Give synonyms;

Give the opposite.

Don't Panic!

Learning a foreign language takes some time, don't worry. As you, everybody is learning and have their own doubts.

Take your time and enjoy yourself!

Self introduction

My name is Caroline Corrêa, I'm 19 and study Languages at UFRGS. I chose Bachelor English/Portuguese because I love literature and movies and I want to work with translation. On this blog I'm going to introduce the Life on Campus.
That's all folks. ;)

Interviewing Gabriel Curuja

My name is Vinícius de Moraes and I did an interview with my classmate of English I, Gabriel Curuja. To start exposing his answers, I'm going to tell you about his choice for the course of Letters; in his words: "Well, there are two things that I like the most, computers and books, so I had to choose between Computer Science and Letters; at the end, Letters sounded more interesting so I chose it.

About his beliefs and religion, he said that he doesn't believe in the religions themselves (however he does believe in a superior existence). He also emphasizes respect for people's religions and beliefs.

My interview would be incomplete if I didn't ask his opinion about one of the most important issues nowadays, susteinability. He thinks we should make something to preserve it, because, in his words: "Nature never fails to surprise me, even though we humans harm it, nature is always beautiful."

Never too late

The most of people thinks that, to enter the university, you must be a teenager; however, Alexandra, one of our classmates at UFRGS, has started here when she was 27 years old. Sometime ago, she tried to study Law at PUCRS, but it was very expensive. She didn’t give up, and, in 2010, she started to study Letters at a federal (and public!) university.

Today, Alexandra is 28 years old, and is expecting a child. She is still studying, and intends, after finish her graduation, to do a post-graduation to be able to teach Literature at colleges and English at English schools.

At least for me, her life is an example to be followed. She are learning so well, and her life experience don’t disturb her, nevertheless, it helps her and the rest of the class, giving to the class a little more of knowledge. I’m glad to study with people like her. And it’s always better to study with people that we know. Hey, students, this is Alexandra!

Self introduction

I'm Jonathan Zotti da Silva (but you can call me just Jon). I'm 18 years old and I have started to study Teaching Development in Portuguese and English (Licenciatura em Letras Português/Inglês) at UFRGS this year. I love teaching and learning - ok, I love education, haha. Changing Brazilian education is very complicated, but I'll change whatever I can. I don't want to leave out this world without leaving my mark in it.

Self introduction

My name is Vinícius de Moraes, and I'm a student of Letters at UFRGS (Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), in the country of Brazil. Presenting a little bit about myself, I most like foreign music, sitcoms, sites of humor and movies (I used to love video-games, but nowadays I seldom play with someone, 'cause I'm not "addicted" anymore). And about my personality, I'm not a very social kinda guy, but I try to be friendly.
